Hey friends, watchers and anyone else who just stumbled across this message,
I dont usually have a problem with the internet's haphazard stance on the sharing of information and ideas. I've always felt like that was part of the idea. Everyone has access to everything if you just take the time to find it. Same goes for artwork. Not just my own, but everyone's. If you enjoy it, then enjoy it. Post it around. Be free and happy. I usually ask that if you're going to post something i drew on another website, just give me a shout out; tag me or just write in 'art by______.' That's all. Unfortunately, it has recently come to my attention that my artwork (among several other professional and amateur artist's on and off of DA) has been snatched up by a couple "companies" and being used to print on phone cases and other merchandise. While flattering, it's rubbing me the wrong way. Now, don't get me wrong, I have an agreement with a t-shirt website and i get a cut for every shirt they sell with my designs. In my opinion, that's how it should be. But these phone case folks just snatched up images from around the web and are making a profit with no approval, citation or compensation going to the artist. Now, that's just not right.
The problem now, is I'm not sure what to do about that. I (and another DA alum who will remain nameless for now) have attempted to contact these sites, but have generally received no response or a request for legal documentation of copyright ownership. Which, as you've probably guessed, I don't have. I'll be combing through DA's policies to see if they offer any kind of assistance or direction when this kind of thing happens, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
So, two things...
Don't buy stuff from these places, they're dicks.
AND! I've gone back and added DA watermarks to most of my artwork which pains me because i feel it takes away from the viewer. It puts a big gleaming corporate stamp between you and the stuff I'm ever so glad you're taking a closer look at. A double-edged sword if I've ever come across one.
Thus concludes my rant. I'll update if anything new comes up. If any of you have been in this situation before and would like to offer some advise, please do so!
